A leader in transport solutions for more than 170 years, Siemens Mobility builds and maintains trains and provides rail infrastructure solutions in Britain. We transform rail travel and transport with our skilled workforce of 5,500 UK employees and 2,100 suppliers, 60% of which are UK based SMEs. Around 92% of all our suppliers are based in the UK.
Siemens Mobility operates from 30 key UK locations from Southampton to Glasgow and has manufacturing facilities in Chippenham and in Ashby de la Zouch. 50% of our Chippenham and Ashby manufacturing facilities production is exported. We are investing £100 million to replace our current site in Chippenham with a new state-of-the-art facility set to open in 2026.
The company has also built a new £240m rail manufacturing facility, in Goole, East Yorkshire. Officially opened in October 2024, it is ramping up to provide employment for up to 1,000 people and up to 1,700 in the supply chain. The Goole Rail Village consists of the Train Manufacturing Facility which assembles and commissions trains, the Components Facility where Siemens maintains gearboxes and traction motors, the Logistics Centre warehousing facility and the RaisE business centre, all of which will be joined by the Bogie Assembly and Service Centre towards the end of 2026. Around 80% of the 94 new Piccadilly line trains are being built at the site.
The company was instrumental in developing the National Training Academy for Rail (NTAR) that opened in 2015 following a 50/50 investment by Siemens and NSAR with DfT/BEIS. NTAR’s curriculum addresses the industry skills gap and the need to focus on technological advancement of the sector. As of December 2024, 28,000 individuals have been trained.
