Porterbrook has been at the heart of the UK rail network for three decades and owns around a quarter of the national passenger rail fleet, with around 4,000 vehicles in our diverse portfolio of passenger and freight rolling stock.

Since privatisation, Porterbrook has invested £3bn in 2,500 new passenger and freight vehicles, and is looking to invest a further £1bn in UK rail over coming years.

We are a partner that adds value today and for the future, mobilising private finance to drive rail growth through tailored leasing solutions, industry leading innovations and essential network projects that deliver a safe, efficient and sustainable railway. In collaboration with industry partners, we project manage the delivery of regular upgrades to our fleets. Each year we invest over £100m in our existing assets, supporting over 100 UK-based companies and c.7,000 jobs.

Our talented engineers are leading some of the most exciting innovations taking place in the railway today. Since 2018 we’ve invested over £73m in the development of greener and smarter traction technologies such as battery, hybrid and hydrogen powered trains. These innovations support the government’s commitment to net zero by 2050 ambitions, improve air quality, reduce emissions, and enhance network resilience.

Our Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre in Warwickshire is an invaluable asset for the railway to test and trial new traction technologies, securely store rolling stock and train in a live environment. Since June 2021, we’ve invested over £10m to upgrade the site, bringing new facilities and services online that benefit customers, partners and suppliers throughout the rail industry.
