The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) exists to help UK companies export. This ranges from those looking to export for the first time to more experienced exporters seeking to increase their overseas sales or enter new markets. DBT work with product and service companies, large or small, regardless of their sector. To help you on your export journey DBT provide a number of paid and free services including networking events, seminars webcasts, market visits, market reports and 1:1 support.
International Trade Advisors: DBT employ International Trade Advisors (ITAs) to help you on your export journey. ITAs are regionally based often with responsibility for covering specific sectors.

DBT also rely on the global network of UK Embassies most of which contain a team of Trade / Commercial Officers. Services available include providing market research reports through to identifying contacts and / or arranging meetings and events. Some support is free to access although there are some charges for specific projects e.g. specialist research or trade missions.

Information for GB Exporters to EU – EU Member State VAT
UKEF is the UK’s export credit agency and a government department, working alongside the DIT as an integral part of its strategy and operations. They help UK companies to:
- win export contracts by providing attractive financing terms to their buyers
- fulfil contracts by supporting working capital loans
- get paid by insuring against buyer default
UKEF can support exports for any size of company and across all sectors, from capital goods to services and intangibles such as intellectual property.
In February 2021 UKEF launched its Standard Buyer Loan Guarantee (SBLG), a new product designed to help overseas buyers access government financial support and boost demand for UK exports. More details and information on how to apply can be found here.

GEF is a new scheme whereby a guarantee is issued in favour of a lender to support the general financing needs of eligible exporters. The guarantee can cover a broad range of facility types extended by a lender to an exporter, regardless of whether those facilities are used for domestic or international trade purposes. The UK Export Academy provide free online training on how to sell your products or services to the world. The UK Export Academy can support your business to grow by giving you the confidence and know-how to land your first or next overseas deal. It only a few minutes to get started and the course are no more than 1 hour long. Once you select a training module you can watch live or join on-demand.
The Essentials training events are designed for those who are new to exporting and gives you the confidence to take your first steps. Courses include ‘How to sell your services overseas’, ‘Explore the benefits and barriers of export’, and ‘How to conduct your international market research’.
Masterclass training covers key topics delivered by industry experts and aims to broaden your knowledge of international trade. Upcoming courses include ‘Harness the power of ChatGPT to drive your international growth’ and ‘Say it just right: The importance of translation!’
Sector and market training focus on individual countries and sectors. Upcoming courses include ‘Unlock Europe: How to build your business in the EU’ and ‘Business Culture in France’. We will be introducing course specific to the rail sector in 2025.
