We are delighted to host a special briefing event for Rail Forum members on the government’s recently published consultation ahead of the Railways Bill, ‘A railway fit for Britain’s future’.
During this 60-minute session you will hear from senior colleagues from the DfT’s Rail Reform Directorate on the consultation and the Great British Railways Transition Team who will give an overview of steps for GBR design. There will be plenty of time for Q&A; members can also pre-submit questions in advance to jemma@railforum.uk.
In order to enable as many members to attend as possible and, to avoid travelling for what is a relatively short briefing session, this event will be hosted on MS Teams.
The Government published its consultation on 18 February, and it will be open for 8 weeks, closing on 15 April. The government are seeking views from across the public sector on the proposals it has set out for the Railways Bill, which will build on the Public Ownership Act to deliver the government’s reform agenda. The Bill will establish Great British Railways and, in its own words, will be:
“a once-in-a-generation overhaul of the fundamental rules, structures, and bodies that make up our rail industry. The Bill will enable us to establish GBR and give it the authority and autonomy it needs to run the network in the public interest. It will enable GBR to be empowered and drive better performance, increased revenue and cost reduction in the interests of passengers, freight customers and taxpayers. It will create a new watchdog to act as an independent voice and champion for passengers. It will also realise the economic and environmental benefits of rail freight through a new statutory duty, recognising the sector’s growth potential.”
