Sir Peter Hendy, Chairman of Network Rail, will be the keynote speaker at the conference ConnectedCities: Metroisation of the Railways.
Sir Peter has stated that a cultural change is required so that the railway becomes accustomed to operating the kind of service frequencies more commonly associated with a metro system.
Frequent rail services everywhere will enable local authorities and developers to deliver sustainable development of both market and affordable housing in healthy communities where active travel and frequent, reliable public transport are the norm.
Station based developments not only reduce traffic congestion, but provide solutions for the triple crises of climate change, NHS and housing. All three can be assisted by improved rail services at the heart of healthy, low carbon new development with integrated and active transport. Rail is the cleanest transport mode, with 11% of passenger miles, but only 3% of transport carbon emissions.
The Government’s Queen’s Speech commits to:
-
Build at least a million more homes over the Parliamentary period
-
£10 billion Single Housing Infrastructure fund
while
-
Upgrading urban commuter and regional services outside London
-
Midlands Rail Hub improved services in Birmingham and the West and East Midlands
-
Northern Powerhouse Rail
-
Reopening lines and stations closed under the Beeching cuts countrywide
The conference will highlight new sources of income that can be tapped by sharing in the uplift of land and house prices which arise from enhanced rail services, as well as recent successful implementation of the latest technology to achieve the necessary improvements.
By working with the rail industry, local authorities, housebuilders and developers have the opportunity to springboard a new era of Net Zero emissions and enable climate emergency commitments to be met.
Tickets are prices at £125 plus VAT.
