Russian Railways had signed an agreement to produce hydrogen-powered trains, according to a Rail Pro report on 19.09.2019.
RIA Novosti news agency broke the news that the production of hydrogen-powered trains was agreed between Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, train production company – Transmashholding and the representative of Sakhalin Region, at the Eastern Economic Forum.
Russian Railways believes that hydrogen-powered trains could have both environmental and economic benefits.
The transition to the hydrogen-powered trains as well as building the infrastructure for their maintenance requires a preliminary feasibility study.
Russian Railways claim that Sakhalin Island will provide an ideal training-ground for testing the new equipment, and a competence centre to develop organisational and technological solutions.
Implemented in stages, the project will begin with a feasibility study where entire life-cycle decisions will be adopted.
Comprehensive tests will be conducted, followed by a compliance process with safety requirements.
