Following on from our event highlighting the facilities at University of Derby’s Railway Research Innovation Centre, we are delighted to launch, in partnership with University of Birmingham, a new event at the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) showcasing the facilities on site available to SMEs in the D2N2 area through the Innovate 4 Rail project.
The Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) is Europe’s largest academic-based group that provides world-class research, education, and innovation to the global rail industry. With over 180 staff including academics, researchers and professional support staff, they offer an expanding portfolio of programmes, including participation in the Innovate4Rail project.
BCRRE is also the lead partner in the £92m UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN), a collaboration between academic centres of excellence and the rail industry. UKRRIN is revolutionising innovation in the rail industry by bringing together academia with industrial partners from all over the supply chain.
Procured through the Constructing West Midlands Framework, the BCRRE research facility offers a variety of contemporary and flexible design and research spaces. The facility has project labs, light electronics labs and state-of-the-art equipment including cab simulators, a signalling control centre, and a cybersecurity test lab, along with electronic fabrication and technology assets to enable high quality, fast-paced research, through to proof-of-concept and testing.
The centre houses specialist research in digital railway engineering, focusing on railway control and simulation, data integration, cybersecurity, condition monitoring and sensing, and improved methods for technology introduction.
The programme for the event is as follows:
- Arrival and Welcome (with refreshments – tea/coffee)
- BCRRE Intro and Scene Setting – Prof Clive Roberts, Director, BCRRE/Dr Jenny Illingsworth, Centre Manager, BCRRE
- I4R update – University of Derby Team
- Railway Research Support & Activities (home and abroad) – Robert Hopkin, International Collaboration & SME Engagement
- 2 x ‘elevator pitch’ case study examples of work undertaken
- Buffet Lunch and networking (with 2-3 super friendly researchers in attendance)
- Lab Tour (to include, but not limited to: simulators, power labs, pantograph test rig, condition monitoring, etc.
