Tidyco, a leading provider of hydraulic and pneumatic solutions, proudly welcomed Catherine Atkinson, MP for Derby North, to its headquarters in Derby as part of National Apprenticeship Week. The visit highlighted the company’s commitment to nurturing future talent through its comprehensive apprenticeship programme, which has been running since 2008 and providing young people with valuable hands-on experience and career opportunities in engineering and manufacturing.
During the visit, Catherine Atkinson MP toured Tidyco’s offices and workshops, engaging with apprentices and senior management to discuss the impact of apprenticeships on young people and the industry as a whole. The visit underscored the importance of investing in vocational education, particularly in regions like Derby, which has a long-standing reputation for excellence in engineering and manufacturing.
Championing Apprenticeships in Engineering and Manufacturing
Tidyco has long been an advocate for apprenticeships as a means of addressing the skills gap in the UK manufacturing and engineering sectors. With a structured programme designed to equip apprentices with practical skills and technical knowledge, the company plays a vital role in training the next generation of engineers.
Speaking during her visit, Catherine Atkinson MP praised the company’s efforts in fostering young talent: “It’s fantastic to see companies like Tidyco investing in apprenticeships and offering young people a clear path into skilled careers. Derby has a rich industrial heritage, and it’s vital that we continue to support initiatives that encourage innovation and sustainability in manufacturing. Meeting the apprentices today has been truly inspiring, and it’s clear they are gaining invaluable experience that will shape their futures.”
A Day at Tidyco: Engaging with Apprentices
Catherine Atkinson MP spent time speaking with apprentices to gain insight into their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. The apprentices shared their journeys, from joining the programme to gaining hands-on experience in hydraulic and pneumatic engineering, rail overhaul, and manufacturing processes. Many highlighted how Tidyco’s apprenticeship scheme has provided them with essential workplace skills, mentorship, and career progression opportunities.
One apprentice, Paige Capewell, our first female apprentice and our first one doing Mechatronics, said: “Being an apprentice at Tidyco has given me the chance to learn practical skills while also studying towards my qualifications. The support from the team has been incredible, and I feel confident about my future in engineering.”
Investing in the Future Workforce
Tidyco’s Production Director, Philip Mason, expressed his enthusiasm for the visit and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to apprenticeship schemes, which have been running since 2008: “We are delighted to welcome Catherine Atkinson MP to our facilities during National Apprenticeship Week. At Tidyco, we strongly believe that apprenticeships are a key driver of industry growth and sustainability. By investing in the next generation of engineers, we are not only securing the future of our business but also contributing to the UK’s wider manufacturing sector.”
The company’s apprenticeship programmes covers a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical and electrical engineering, mechatronics, accountancy, and business administration, ensuring apprentices receive a well-rounded education that aligns with industry needs.
Supporting Local Talent and Economic Growth
As Derby continues to position itself as a hub for manufacturing and innovation, partnerships between local businesses and educational institutions are crucial in sustaining economic growth. Tidyco works closely with local colleges and training providers to ensure its apprentices receive high-quality training tailored to industry standards.
Catherine Atkinson MP emphasised the broader significance of supporting apprenticeships in Derby: “Encouraging young people into skilled careers through apprenticeships is essential for the future of our local economy. Employers like Tidyco are leading the way by providing high-quality training and career opportunities. This government is unlocking apprenticeships for up to ten thousand more young people whilst helping businesses to close skills gaps required to achieve ambitious economic growth for our country.”
National Apprenticeship Week: Raising Awareness and Driving Change
National Apprenticeship Week is an annual event that celebrates the achievements of apprentices and showcases the positive impact of apprenticeships on individuals, businesses, and the economy. The week serves as a platform to raise awareness about vocational training opportunities and encourage more young people to consider apprenticeships as a viable career path.
Tidyco actively participates in National Apprenticeship Week by hosting events, engaging with schools and colleges, and promoting the benefits of apprenticeships. This year, the company is proud to highlight its success stories and encourage more young people to explore careers in engineering and manufacturing.
Looking Ahead: Tidyco’s Commitment to Skills Development
Tidyco remains dedicated to supporting apprenticeships and providing young people with opportunities to excel in technical professions. By continuing to invest in training and development, the company aims to play a pivotal role in strengthening the UK’s industrial workforce. Another way Tidyco does this is by the Toolbox Challenge, which Philip Mason established, whereby he visits schools in the area promoting the value of metalwork and apprenticeships
As the visit concluded, Catherine Atkinson MP expressed her appreciation for Tidyco’s efforts and reiterated the importance of government and industry collaboration in expanding apprenticeship opportunities. She encouraged other businesses to recognise the value of investing in young talent and ensuring the sustainability of the country’s engineering sector.
