CAF Rail UK Achieves Carbon-Neutral Status For A Second Year

CAF Rail UK has announced it has achieved carbon-neutral status for a second year, confirming its continued commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.

It celebrates its ongoing strategy to deliver not only zero carbon impacts but also to create positive carbon initiatives in the future.

Much of CAF Rail UK’s success over the last 12 months has been due to efforts at its rolling stock maintenance depot in Chester, where it has achieved a reduction of 200 tonnes of waste as a result of its collaboration with sustainable waste management provider ASH Waste.

James Harris, Head of Compliance at CAF Rail UK, said: “We have made some incredible strides in the last 2 years across our UK operations but recognise we still have a lot of work to do in 2025 and beyond, but the partnership established between Rail CAF UK and ASH Waste has become a great example of working with local businesses to deliver the best possible solutions for our people, product and the environment.

“The work completed by both teams has been nothing short of inspirational, with the turnaround of waste to energy and landfill being particular highlights. We reduced our carbon footprint across scope 1,2,3 while increasing operations, which is an incredible achievement.”

Waste management in the UK rail industry is one of the main areas of improvement focused on by many companies. CAF Rail and ASH Waste are delivering on this in several ways, from 80% turnaround of waste to energy and landfill moving to waste recycling and reuse, reduced collections, zero carbon impacts and significant savings that have been invested in training, facility resources and offsetting initiatives within the UK.

“It is essential that we recognise these achievements while ensuing our long-term commitment to a sustainable business is established” added James.

CAF Rail UK is sponsoring Carbon Neutral’s Marston Vale Forest Creation Project to support its carbon-neutral certification and offset emissions in UK projects.

The Forest of Marston Vale is a Community Forest and charity. It plants trees and uses woodlands to improve the lives of people and wildlife in its 61 square-mile area between Bedford and Milton Keynes.

The charity has planted over two million trees and intends to plant another five million to create 30% tree cover. This will help cool and clean the air, lock up carbon, reduce flooding, and provide sustainable raw materials. Along with combating the climate crisis, the project fosters social value by encouraging community engagement in tree planting and conservation efforts and creating education and recreational opportunities.

CAF Rail UK has renewed its pledge to promote a culture of environmental responsibility within its workforce to contribute to its carbon reduction goals. It also committed to transparency and accountability, with regular updates on its journey towards net zero.
