Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems UK has partnered with Northern to complete critical upgrades on the Class 331 and 195 fleets, ensuring they’re equipped to meet the challenges of autumn leaf fall.
The collaboration was prompted by discussions at the National Adhesion Review in early 2024, where Northern shared insights into low adhesion issues affecting train performance. Knorr-Bremse and Northern agreed to investigate potential braking and sanding system factors and within weeks, Knorr-Bremse began diagnostics and inspections across Northern’s depots to address any sanding performance concerns.
This project aimed to ensure fleet readiness for the autumn season by completing modifications on Class 331 and 195 fleets at Northern’s TrainCare Centres in Newton Heath, Allerton, and Neville Hill. Given the 30 September 2024 deadline to meet seasonal requirements, the project progressed within a 10-week timeframe – an accelerated schedule that involved extensive work to overhaul and test critical sanding components.
Key activities included cleaning and refilling 404 sand hoppers, replacing sand valves and pressure regulating valves, and ensuring thorough testing of each unit to improve traction control on slippery tracks. Additional staffing support from Ford & Stanley Talent Services Group provided skilled technicians to assist in timely project delivery. Despite a tight timeline, the teams met the completion date without disruption to Northern’s services.
The upgraded sanding systems offer precise control over sand application to the railhead, reducing the risk of wheel slip and contributing to safer, more reliable rail operations throughout the leaf fall season. These modifications also support Northern’s commitment to maintaining service quality and reliability for passengers.
Mick Milhinch, business development manager for Knorr-Bremse, said: “Low adhesion has been a persistent industry challenge, and the upgraded sanding systems provide an important measure in enhancing performance and safety during autumn. We appreciated the opportunity to work with Northern on a project that addresses these seasonal concerns.”
Northern’s director of fleet, Iain Burnett, commented: “Knorr-Bremse adapted to our needs and worked seamlessly within our TrainCare Centres. This project has positively impacted our operations, and we look forward to further partnerships that enhance fleet performance.”
This project reflects a shared commitment to safety and operational resilience across the UK rail network, with both Knorr-Bremse and Northern focused on sustaining effective, long-term solutions for seasonal rail challenges.
