Unipart’s ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, adding external transparency and assurance to Unipart’s 2040 net zero objective.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body that defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets ensuring they are in line with the latest climate science.
Unipart has had both its near-term and net zero targets validated by the SBTi – this is the most ambitious level of validation available from the SBTi.
The SBTi has validated Unipart’s commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the Unipart’s operations and value chain (Scope 1, 2 and 3) by 2040. The following near- and long-term targets have been validated by the SBTi:
Near-term targets
Unipart Group commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2030 from a 2021 base year.
Unipart Group commits that 75% of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services and upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by 2027.
Unipart Group commits that 75% of its customers by emissions covering use of sold products will have science-based targets by 2027.
Long-term targets
Unipart Group commits to maintain at least 90% absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions from 2030 through 2040 from a 2021 base year.
Unipart Group commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2040 from a 2021 base year.
Andy Pyne, Unipart Group Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “SBTi validation of our commitment is a terrific achievement for Unipart and our stakeholders, as it demonstrates the high level of urgency we are making to sustainability across our entire value chain.
This success has only been possible by all our people using The Unipart Way to deliver our customer promise, making our operations and our customers’ operations more sustainable over the last three decades by driving out non-value adding activity.
The latest climate science from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows it’s still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. We encourage all our stakeholders the length of the value chain to align with climate science by committing to science-based 1.5°C and net-zero targets.”
