On behalf of the joint venture between Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall (EKFB), Fishbone is delighted to announce the ‘One-Millionth Tonne’ of materials has been delivered by rail for their HS2 construction sites.
This monumental achievement follows on from the prestigious ‘Runner Up’ in ‘Rail Project of the Year 2021’ at the Rail Freight Group (RFG) Awards, presented to the partnership of EKFB, Fishbone, DB Cargo, Hanson, Network Rail and Mendip Rail in September 2021.
The partners have been working at dedicated EKFB railheads, managed by Fishbone, and are soon to mobilise a fourth new facility. Fishbone’s rail industry stakeholders have been instrumental in solving the complex logistical challenges that are associated with delivering the increasing variety of construction materials required for HS2.
The transport of Materials by Rail (MbR) has successfully achieved a significant reduction in lorry journeys and associated congestion from UK roads, reducing the carbon impact, whilst improving the quality of life for local communities.
The one-millionth tonne milestone has removed 11,399 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Has delivered over 583 rail freight journeys’ resulting in the removal of more than 100,000 lorry movements from the UK’s roads and highlights the benefits that collaboration within the rail freight industry brings as EKFB continues to meet HS2’s environmental requirements.
In celebration, the millionth tonne was delivered by DB Cargo’s innovative “Green” powered Class 66 locomotive, which is fuelled by environmentally friendly hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
